Frequently Asked Questions

How sharp are the knives?

The blades that go into every Handy Twine Knife have a sharp edge.  Our sharpest knife is our "ULTRA GOLD" Titanium Nitride coated knife.  Titanium Nitride (TiN) is an extremely hard ceramic material that we apply to the sharp edge of the blade. This coating adds to the life of the blade because it resists wear.  We ask that our customers be very cautious when using this product. Our knives are a working tool and should only be used as such. If an injury should occur during the use (or misuse) of a Handy Twine Knife, it is a risk that our customers assume and we can in no way he held accountable. Our customers expect Handy Twine Knives to deliver a high quality, razor-sharp edge. In turn, we ask each customer to use our product safely and wisely.

I don’t want to order the wrong size, what should I know?

Both styles of the metal ring knives are available in standard ring sizes from 3 through 18. Those sizes are the same as a jewelry store ring size. Our most popular sizes for ladies are 7 through 9 and for men, sizes 12 through 16. If you currently have a Handy Twine Knife, the size is stamped on the ring's band. If you still are not sure, order a little larger than you think you might need. The ring can be made smaller by wrapping it with string or tape for a “custom” fit. If you order knives that are too small there isn’t much you can do to make them larger.

The plastic ring knives come in sizes small, medium and large.  These knives have a split in the back of the band that allows them to fit on different size fingers.  For example, our small (red) plastic ring knife fits finger sizes 8 - 10, medium (green) fits sizes 11 - 14 and large (blue) fits sizes 15 and up.

May I return them?

Sure. Within 30 days you may return (for merchandise credit) any unused, full dozens that are in re-sellable condition. Your return may be subject to a re-stocking fee.

Does it matter on which finger I wear the ring knife?

No. Wear it where it is comfortable and gives you the best performance.

Size 18 is huge. Who would wear one that large?

Many of our customers – such as recyclers, newspaper/ magazine delivery people, and others who work outside, wear the ring over gloves.

Do you have a “safety” knife?

Yes, we make two types of safety knives.  We have a metal version with a “ball point” safety tip.  Everything about the knife is the same as the Original ring knife, except that the tip of the blade is designed a little differently.  Our plastic ring knife uses the same blade as the Original ring knife and has a split in the band that will allow the users finger to "pull out" in the event of the blade becoming caught in moving machinery etc.  See our product page for pictures. Both the metal and the plastic ring knives are extremely safe. Most of what we sell are the Original ring knives.

What are some of the most unusual uses for The Handy Twine Knife?

It seems that there are as many uses for our knife as there are companies that use them.  Our ring knife has been used to: tie grape vines to the fence and then again to harvest the grapes, trim mop heads, cut the netting that ham and turkeys come wrapped in, cut sausage and hot dog casings, trim/strip the wires in automotive electrical systems, cut Christmas tree netting, trim bananas for packaging, and much much more!  Our knives are used extensively "behind the scenes" in many manufacturing processes.  From carpet to corrugated, fiberglass to fishing line, textiles to tires, our knives are used to make a lot of the things you see and use everyday.

Are your knives approved to be used with food products?

Yes, many of our customers use the ring knife for meat packing and other food purposes, therefore we have had the knife approved by the USDA for contact with food products. You can view a pdf of our approval letter here.
